Health Information Exchange Advisory Commission

The Rhode Island Health Information Exchange Act of 2008 establishes safeguards and confidentiality protections for currentcare, the statewide health information exchange system, in order to:

  1. Improve the quality, safety, and value of health care;
  2. Keep health information secure and confidential; and
  3. Use the health information exchange system to progress toward meeting public health goals.

One safeguard noted in the Act is the establishment of a Health Information Exchange (HIE) Advisory Commission. The commission will make policy recommendations to the Director of Health regarding the use of the confidential health information in currentcare. The Commission will also collaborate with Rhode Island Quality Institute, which serves as the state's designated Regional Health Information Organization.
